When Should You Floss Your Teeth?

Barbara Hartman one of our Dental Hygienist answers the question – When Should You Floss Your Teeth?

Here is what I recommend to patients.  I have not read any scientific data supporting my recommendations, but these are things that seem to help.

  • Floss before brushing and you will less likely to skip doing it.
  • Floss 1 x day.  I think it is good to floss in the evening so that any food particles or plaque can be removed before going to sleep.  While sleeping, we have less saliva and we are not drinking water, etc. so teeth more prone to decay during this time period.
  • Floss shortly after dinner if possible, you will not want to floss when you are very tired. Also, flossing after dinner keeps you from late-night eating.
  • If flossing in the evening just doesn’t work, do it anytime.  The important thing is that you are disrupting the plaque every 24 hours.
