The Importance of Regular Dental Checkups

At Sherman Oaks Dental, we want to make sure that everyone in the Naperville area has the beautiful smile they deserve, but we can’t do it without your help. To protect your smile from decay and the need for costly restorative procedures, it is essential to start practicing good preventative care today. One of the best things you can do to protect your smile is to attend regular dental checkups.

Regular Dental Checkups

At Sherman Oaks Dental, we recommend that most people come in for a checkup every six months, unless Dr. Weyneth instructed you otherwise. For example, those with a high risk of periodontal disease need more frequent appointments to manage that risk. in general, if you use tobacco, have diabetes, have gum disease, have a weak immune system, are pregnant, are undergoing unusual stress, or easily get cavities, make sure to let us know and ask what your personal timetable should look like.

During your dental exam, your teeth will be cleaned and flossed thoroughly to remove bacteria, plaque, and tartar. Your teeth will be examined for signs of decay or damage, and your gums will be examined for signs of infection or other issues. X-rays will usually be taken to allow our doctors to see the health of your teeth. In some cases, a fluoride treatment may be recommended. If we find any signs of decay or other problems, our team will explain your treatment options. In many cases, the issues may be taken care of during the same visit, so you can leave our office with a bright, healthy smile.

Benefits

When you come in for a dental exam, you give our team the opportunity to remove bacteria and plaque from hard to reach places, as well as the chance to remove tartar which is too hard to be removed with a toothbrush. We can also advise you on how to improve your daily dental care routine, so you get the most out of it. Regular checkups mean dental problems are more likely to be found early, when they are less complex and serious. Finally, frequent checkups can work to keep your teeth strong and white as they are professionally cleaned, polished, and treated with fluoride.

A dental exam is also an opportunity to watch for signs of other health problems which frequently present in the mouth. We may be the first to tell you about a serious condition you're developing, including oral cancer. Early treatment is generally more likely to be effective, so these regular checks are an important safeguard for your overall health.
