If you have experienced pain in or near your jaw joint, it’s likely that you have TMJ syndrome (also called simply TMJ, TMD, or TMJ disorder). TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint—the joint that connects your jaw to the rest of your skull. TMJ is an umbrella term for many issues with separate causes and symptoms that all affect this joint.
Even if you have TMJ, you might not experience pain directly in the joint. Other possible symptoms include:
- A popping, cracking, or clicking sound or sensation when you move your jaw
- Trouble chewing
- Ear pain, ringing, or a feeling of fullness
- Sore neck muscles
- Shoulder pain
- Facial pain
- Swelling in the face or temples
- Jaw spasms
- A jaw that is locked in one position, either open or closed
- Blurred vision
- Numbness or tingling in the jaw or face
If you have one or more of these symptoms, it may be time to seek a diagnosis and treatment. At Sherman Oaks, we are pleased to be able to offer assessment and treatment for TMJ in Naperville.
Our ability to diagnose TMJ and evaluate the positioning of your jaw has been greatly increased by the development of modern technology. In particular, we are able to offer T-Scan, which allows us to see when and how your teeth come together when you bite. If your teeth are not properly aligned, it can put uneven pressure on your jaw—one of the factors that causes TMJ.
Living with TMJ takes its toll on your comfort, your sleep, and your happiness. Don’t let it last any longer than it has to. Call our office or contact us online, and let us relieve your discomfort.
