Sealants: Adding Armor to Your Teeth!

by on June 15, 2011

A common question Dr. Weyneth, of Sherman Oaks Dental in Naperville, is asked is, “Do my kids really need sealants for their teeth?”

First, Dr. Weyneth would like to share some sealant information.

What are dental sealants?  Dental Sealants are thin, clear or shaded plastic coatings that are carefully applied to grooved and pitted surfaces of your teeth, especially back teeth.  The back teeth are where most cavities in children are found.

Sealants are like Dental Armor.  Just like knights wore armor to protect their bodies in battles, our teeth “wear” sealants to protect cavitites from forming. Sealants help to keep food and bacteria from building up in crevices and deep surfaces in your teeth.   Sealants help reduce the risk of tooth decay.

How long do sealants last? Sealants can last up to 10 years.  Dr. Weyneth will check your sealants at each dental visit and recommend reapplication when needed.

How will Dr. Weyneth apply the sealants? Your children will not need to worry about a long process or discomfort.  In one dental visit, Dr. Weyneth will quickly and comfortably apply the sealant to the teeth.  First, the teeth will be cleaned. Next, the tooth will be conditioned and dried. And last, the plastic sealant will be applied into the grooves of the teeth.  A special light will be used to dry the sealant completely.

When should sealants be applied?  Each person has a unique dental situation.  At each dental visit, Dr. Weyneth will make recommendations to keep your teeth their healthiest with a complete dental program.
